University of Portsmouth Graphic Design Showcase Book 2024
University Project
Brief
Design the identity for the University of Portsmouth's 2024 Graphic Design Showcase. This involves designing the showcase book as well as creating assets & guidelines for others to use on separate deliverables (project showreel and student info website). At the end of each academic year, the Graphic Design course at University of Portsmouth have a showcase for all of the current graduate’s work. We worked as a team to create the catalogue which contains previews of everyone’s work as well as information about the course for prospective students & employers to view.

Concept
In order to stand out from other universities at student design shows, we decided to have a Portsmouth related theme for the showcase book which drew inspiration from the oceanic topography lines surrounding the island city. This style is easily animated due to the simplicity of the lines, and when considering print / manufacture costs it fits the budget set by the course which is extremely important. For the final books, we had 4 different colour variations printed which create a gradient when stacked on top of each other and represent different levels of ocean depth. The paper used are all variations of GF Smith colorplan paper, meaning that the final cost is indifferent to if we used only one shade of blue paper.

Research & Inspiration

To learn more about Portsmouth's geography, me and the team had a look at some old maps from the 1800s-1900s to learn about the contour lines as well as different map layout techniques which were implemented into our design.

These projects are good too:
